"As much as we hate = to=20 admit it, appearances matter," says New York = City-based image=20 consultant Elena Castaneda. This isn't news to you. = You know=20 all too well how your CEO smiles approvingly at the = Topher=20 Graces rising through the ranks and how easy it is to = peg the=20 over-35 crowd in the halls. How do you polish your = image so=20 you can most effectively show off the stuff that = matters=97your=20 intellect and experience? What can you do to turn back = time in=20 the days leading up to a major corporate showdown? = Here are 15=20 ways to put on a more-youthful face.

1. Sleep with an extra = pillow
When you=20 sleep, gravity pools fluid around your lower eyelids, = where=20 the skin is soft and elastic, causing undereye = puffiness. To=20 avoid the bags, slip an extra pillow under your head. = This=20 will encourage gravity to drain the eye area. Chilled = spoons=20 also work. The contour of the spoons will fit = perfectly over=20 your eyes, and the metal will remain cold just long = enough to=20 be effective, about 10 minutes.

2. Put on an act
"People = don't=20 remember facts and figures, they remember = impressions," says=20 Karen Friedman, an award-winning news anchor and = president of=20 Karen Friedman Enterprises, which helps CEOs and = celebrities=20 become more-effective communicators. To leave an = impression of=20 strength, youth, and vitality, be more animated. It'll = make=20 you come across as commanding, credible, = authoritative, and=20 confident. Practice your delivery in front of a friend = or a=20 mirror, keeping these tips in mind:

Project = your=20 voice. A booming voice sounds more youthful than a = whisper. Imagine you are talking directly to the = person in the=20 back of the room.

Speak slower. Quick = talkers=20 appear anxious. Pace your words at around 130 per = minute.=20

Straighten up. "The way you carry = yourself sets=20 the tone for how people will respond," says celebrity = voice=20 coach Renee Grant-Williams. A hunched-over posture = will make=20 you look old before your time. In Voice Power, Using = Your=20 Voice to Captivate, Persuade, and Command Attention,=20 Grant-Williams recommends "the position of power," a = stance=20 that radiates power and control:

3. Run and feed your = brain
"Physical=20 activity can make people more mentally alert," says = brain=20 researcher Judy Cameron, Ph.D., of Oregon Health & = Science=20 University. In her studies, she has found that monkeys = who ran=20 on treadmills grew more blood vessels that supply the = brain=20 with oxygen and sugar-rich blood, the fuel that powers = the=20 brain. And even a single bout of aerobic exercise = floods the=20 body with endorphins that will improve clarity of = thought. Get=20 in a run a few hours before you go on.

4. Strike a slimmer profile =
Research=20 has shown an antifat bias in every realm of society,=20 particularly in the workplace, where fit, youthful = people are=20 more apt to receive promotions, earn larger salaries, = and snag=20 higher-profile projects. You can't slim down in 24 = hours, but=20 you can look thinner by making a few strategic = clothing=20 choices.

Lose the pleats. "Pleated = pants add 5=20 to 10 pounds to your frame because they balloon out = and make=20 your hips appear bigger," says Barbara Seymour, a=20 communications coach who has represented = Bloomingdale's,=20 Neiman Marcus, and RoC.

Go = monochromatic.=20 Wearing one color from head to toe elongates your = look,=20 according to Seymour. Dark tones enhance the effect.=20

Add some nonconformist color. A bold = necktie=20 transmits youthfulness. Add a pocket square for flair. = Make=20 sure it's in the same color family as the tie, but in = a=20 different pattern.

Wear what fits. = "Tight=20 clothes make you look heavier because you bulge = everywhere,=20 and loose ones make you look like you're hiding = something,"=20 says Seymour. "If everything fits just right, you can = give the=20 illusion of thinness."

5. Chew gum, react quicker =
Avoid=20 caffeine when you need to be at your sharpest=97its = effects=20 don't last. Instead, chew peppermint or cinnamon gum, = or suck=20 on peppermint hard candy. Research at Wheeling Jesuit=20 University in West Virginia found a strong link = between the=20 smell of peppermint and improvements in mood, = motivation, and=20 athletic performance. That study complements previous = research=20 tying the scent of peppermint to enhanced energy = levels and=20 cognitive functioning. Another study at Wheeling found = that=20 the smell of cinnamon boosts brainpower and improves = mental=20 dexterity.

6. Hide thinning hair with a=20 haircut
It instantly makes you look younger. = And if you=20 are balding or have fine hair, remember that less is = more,=20 says Losi, of the John Frieda salon in New York City, = whose=20 clients include Harrison Ford, Bill Murray, and Kevin = Spacey.=20 Gravity causes longer hair strands to lie closer to = the scalp,=20 which exposes more skin on the top of your head. "By = getting=20 your hair cut shorter and more layered, you won't see = the=20 scalp, which is the whole point. It's an optical = illusion,"=20 says Losi.

7. Add beer for fuller hair =
Any=20 number of volumizing shampoos will give body to your = hair. A=20 light lager also works. "The yeast clings to each = strand,=20 making hair look fuller," says hair and skin-care = expert=20 Riquette Hofstein.

8. Iron out wrinkles with a = trout
The=20 best foods to keep skin looking young are fish rich in = omega-3=20 fatty acids, like trout, salmon, and tuna, as well as=20 broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and beans. These foods = stem=20 the formation of advanced glycation end-productions, = which=20 cause skin to wrinkle prematurely, according to = research at=20 New York City's Hoffman Center.

9. Have sex, wake up = younger
"Sex=20 brings blood to the surface of the skin, dilates your = pupils,=20 and gives you a youthful air," says sex therapist = Sandor=20 Gardos, Ph.D. Additionally, going to bed 1 hour = earlier than=20 usual will give you the energy of 2 cups of coffee the = next=20 day. By contrast, getting less than 6 hours of sleep = can=20 decrease your performance to the point where you're = operating=20 at the equivalent of a .05 blood-alcohol level, says = former=20 NASA sleep scientist Mark Rosekind, Ph.D., president = of=20 Alertness Solutions.

Anticipation keeping you = up? You=20 don't need to pop Ambien or Nytol. Instead, eat a few = fresh=20 cherries or drink some cherry juice. Researchers at = the=20 University of Texas found that cherries are one of the = best=20 natural sources of melatonin, a popular = over-the-counter sleep=20 aid.

10. Nap like an astronaut =
In a NASA=20 study, a 25-minute nap increased alertness by 54 = percent and=20 performance by 34 percent. Even catnaps of 5 or 10 = minutes can=20 help increase memory and learning.

11. Count on your fingers =
Rough hands=20 are a dead giveaway of age. And gnawed fingernails = suggest=20 that you never grew up. People notice hands the way = they=20 notice shoes, says Seymour. Trim your nails with a = nail=20 clipper and file down any burrs. We won't tell = anybody. Next,=20 rub a little olive oil into your hands. 12. Eat oats for energy

The long-burning carbs and protein will fuel = your body=20 and brain for hours. Wash it down with two 8-ounce = glasses of=20 orange juice. A recent University of Alabama study = found that=20 400 milligrams of vitamin C per day (the amount in a = pint of=20 OJ) significantly reduces the secretion of stress = hormones.=20

13. Swallow B12 for brainpower=20
Vitamin B12 helps lower homocysteine levels = (an amino=20 acid that promotes arterial plaque) and may prevent = depression=20 and improve cognition. But as you get older, your body = doesn't=20 absorb this vitamin as readily from food as it did = when you=20 were younger. If you're 50 or older, take 1,000 = milligrams=20 every day, says Edward L. Schneider, M.D., dean of the = Leonard=20 Davis School of Gerontology at the University of = Southern=20 California.

14. Put on your game face =
Do your=20 sideburns and eyebrows resemble Neil Young's? Trim = them short,=20 then follow this age-erasing plan:
